Pain and type of Pain


According to WHO (World Health Organization), “Pain is an unpleasant sensory or emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage”.

Pain is signals sent by our nervous system that something is wrong happening with us. It is an unpleasant feeling often caused by intense or damaging stimuli. Pain is symptoms of most of medical problems occur to a person. It helps in recognizing a problem that need prompt and urgent attention, otherwise it can cause seriously damage to our body. Once problem is resolved, pain will be disappeared.

Duration and frequency of pain may vary according to person and situation. It may be sharp or dull in feeling. It may be come and go type or it may be constant in duration and frequency. Pain can affect any part of our body. It may feel in back, neck, arms or other parts individually or may feel in whole body altogether.

Pain can be divided into two categories:

·         Acute Pain
·         Chronic Pain

Acute Pain: Acute pain can serve warning of disease or thread to the body and begins suddenly and sharp in frequency. Acute pain might be caused by many factors such as surgery, burn, dental work, broken bone, labor or child birth etc. It may last for few seconds or stay for long duration but usually doesn’t last more than 6 months in most of cases if underlying cause of pain is treated.

Chronic Pain: Pain continuous to feel for weeks, months, or years even after injury has healed. Common chronic pain types are headache, low back pain, cancer pain, arthritis pain, neurogenic pain, psychogenic pain etc. Causes of chronic pain might be unknown or poorly understood. Even few chronic pain treatments are not known.

Treatment of pain is depends upon type, severity and frequency of pain. Both Ayush and Allopathic system of medicine provide treatment to pain. Yoga may also be beneficial in pain management. Few types of pain management therapy is as follow:

Ø  Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
Ø  Narcotic pain killer drugs
Ø  Local Anesthetics
Ø  Yoga
Ø  Meditation
Ø  Acupuncture
Ø  Physical Therapy
Ø  Exercise
Ø  Electrical stimulation
Ø  Surgery
Ø  Psychotherapy
Ø  Behavior modification etc
